House Committee discusses bill regarding death of fetuses

- in Legislative Watch

The House Judiciary B Committee took up House Bill 215 — the so-called “Unborn Victims of Violence Act/Ethen’s Law” — this morning and, as is always the case with discussions of this kind, the topic of abortion rights was an elephant in the room.

According to those in attendance, Rep. Dale Folwell, one of the bill’s chief sponsors and an ardent anti-choice crusader claimed this morning that the bill is not an about abortion and that his intent is to go after “murderers and thugs.” Somehow, it doesn’t seem likely that such comments are likely to assuage the concerns of pro-choice advocates about a bill that assigns virtual personhood to a fetus from the moment of conception.
